Frequently Asked Questions

What is a health coach?

A health coach is a lifestyle change agent, helping others reach their health, wellness and fitness goals. From nutrition guidance to exercise programs and stress reduction techniques, a health coach is a wellness expert that works with clients to create individualized, adaptable, holistic mind-body health plans. Health coaches are trained to encourage, not lecture–and participants always choose their own goals. While coaches are there to provide accountability for participants, they always do so without judgement.

What is the difference between a health coach and a nutritionist?

Nutritionists are trained to focus heavily on food barriers, while health coaches are trained to focus on food as well as lifestyle barriers. The scope of practice varies substantially between nutritionists and health coaches. While neither one can practice medicine as defined by the state they live in, there are some pretty big differences. The scope of practice for a nutritionist is to use knowledge of the effect of food on anatomy and physiology to create nutrition and supplement-based protocols designed to help clients address health issues. While there is heavy training on biochemistry and supplements, some general herbal supplement training, some general lab assessment training, there is a minor focus on lifestyle and stress management. There is little to no focus on goal setting strategies, and sessions are generally the nutritionist providing a detailed protocol for you to implement on your own between sessions. Health coaches have gone deep into learning a lot about biochemistry, anatomy and physiology and nutrition, while also focusing heavily how to make lifestyle changes and rewrite your thought patterns that lead to health barriers. Unlike nutritionists who lead the sessions, health coaches conduct client-led coaching sessions by asking high-mileage questions. These questions help clients identify their own personal strengths, and assist clients in using those strengths to achieve their self-decided lifestyle goals. This involve changes in food as well as lifestyle choices, and the implementation method comes from the client’s own conclusiions as opposed to long protocols developed by the coach. The coach acts as a guide in coming to those conclusions.

Can you read my lab results?

A health coach can look at lab results but cannot prescribe any specific protocol or diet to impact lab results. Health coaches can however encourage which foods are beneficial for overall health.

Can you order me lab testing?

Health coaches are not authorized to order any labs.

Why do we need health coaches?

The current medical system is ill equipped to address the epidemic of chronic disease—which is why health coaches play a vital role in the reinvention of healthcare. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, health coaching (along with other health professions) is growing at a faster rate than any other occupation. The statistics on chronic illness speak for themselves. Highly skilled coaches are crucial for helping people make lifesaving behavior change. The world desperately needs the passion for health and compassion for people that health coaches bring to the table.
